XFC is a image file generated by GIMP, an open source software similar to Adobe Photoshop. XCF file stores layers, tracks, and channels, and the data is easier to edit than that stored as standard raster image.

XCF format was developed by Henning Makholm. XCF doesn’t use compression, so the file can be relatively large. XCF2 format, named as the successor to XCF, offers support for GEGL libraries and is more flexible than its predecessor.
