ARJ is a compressed archive format developed for DOS operating system. Older Windows versions (95, 98, 2000) used dedicated ARJ32 format. As is the case with other file archive formats, ARJ file is a data container that stores one or more compressed files.

ARJ uses compression algorithm developed by Robert Jung. Archive containers can be useful for saving disk space and creating backup copies of data. ARJ supports multiple volume archives.
