File with a .Z extension contains a file or many files processed with a simple compression in Unix type systems. Currently, it is rarely encountered, as it has been substituted be a more effective compression method – GZ, into which a .Z file can be converted with the znew instruction.

Z files can be decompressed easily with the uncompress file_name.Z instruction. File compression enables their archiving and saving disc space.
