Files with the .GPG extension contain public security keys based on the OpenPGP standard, which is based on a document standardizing RFC network protocols number 2440. GPG files are used to decipher files that have been encrypted using GNU Privacy Guard Program.
GnuPG is a free program for encrypting and decrypting files containing sensitive data. PGP software, which is based on the same encryption standards, is, however, unlike GnuPG, not free.
