Files with the .PID extension contain various types of information about processes in a Unix-based system. It is a general file, usually containing a process identifier or several processes - a PID unambiguously indicates given processes in the system, logs, data or a configuration file.

PID files are used, for example, to record identifiers for processes that are periodically automatically run.
