SGM is an extension of files that store documents represented by code in the SGML markup language. It is a generalized language that allows the user to define their own tags written in DTD files. Such files are often referenced in SGM format documents.

The SGM extension is used interchangeably with the SGML extension. SGML has been standardized and is an ISO standard.
