WMP is a high-quality graphic format. It is a bitmap that uses either very efficient lossless compression or high-quality lossy compression. This allows you to store images in smaller files while maintaining very good quality. This format is primarily intended for storing digital photos. Their quality is on a level comparable to the JPEG-2000 format, or even better.

Windows Media Photo has been renamed HD Photo and this has in turn been renamed JPEG XR.
