Such data is mainly used in sending them over networks, as well as multimedia files in mobile devices. 3GPP files are encoded using the MPEG-4 standard. It is a standard developed mainly for multimedia streaming. The 3GPP format was originally developed for Apple's Quick Time tool.

Files of this type much more often have the 3GP extension.
