ASX is an extension given to files that are related to digital media content played in Windows Media Player. ASX files do not store multimedia content but do contain metadata about them. These are text files containing code written in the XML markup language. Sometimes ASX files are used to create playlists for Windows Media Player.

The metadata in the case of ASX files most often concerns the location of the relevant file and how certain content is to be presented.
