M4V files store video data encoded using MPEG-4 standard. M4V format uses copyright protection technology called FairPlay. This solution prevents the file to be opened on unauthorized devices.

M4V format is used by Apple for distributing video files available on iTunes platform. Unprotected M4V files can be manually changed into MP4 by modifing file’s suffix and then opened using a multimedia player.
